In 1978, Hoyt Richards crossed paths with Frederick von Mierers, a charismatic self-styled guru who preached an alluring blend of Eastern philosophy, astrology, and New Age spirituality. From the outside, Hoyt appeared to be a glamorous, globe-trotting model living a life of success and privilege. Yet behind the scenes, he embraced an ascetic existence, zealously spreading Frederick’s teachings while bankrolling much of his mentor’s lavish lifestyle.
