Ben's elderly business associate is tragically killed when a man impersonating Candy attempts to rob her, leading to a fatal heart attack during the crime—legally treated as if the robber had shot her. The genuine Candy, who had been attacked by the same man at a hotel, finds herself implicated in the old woman's demise. Kate is the only one who can corroborate Candy's alibi, but she has left town with her husband, the thief. Griff is tasked with tracking her down for a statement, only to learn, along with Ben and Joe, that her past could jeopardize Candy’s defense if exposed in court. Meanwhile, Ben questions the young defense attorney's capability to represent Candy, especially with the prosecutor boasting an almost perfect conviction rate. Nevertheless, the ambitious lawyer is ready to take on the challenge, eager to be the underdog against the formidable prosecutor.
