Women of Suriname (1978)

Plot

In 1978, *Oema Foe Sranang* — known in Dutch as *Vrouwen van Suriname* — emerged from a close partnership with LOSON, the National Organization for the Struggle of Suriname. This anti-colonial, feminist documentary centered on five Surinamese women, capturing their lives in the wake of Suriname’s 1975 independence. It also exposed the harsh realities faced by Surinamese migrants arriving in the Netherlands, confronting the Dutch public’s openly hostile reception to this significant wave of newcomers.
